#MeToo Egypt

"99% of Egyptian women say they have been harrassed" -BBC News.

Egyptian women have long endured a dangerously patriarchal culture, but they may have reached a turning point.

Recently, an instagram account called "Assault Police" reported the misconduct against a young woman at a luxury hotel in Cairo. The account continued to post about perpetrators of sexual assault, ultimately leading to the arrest of a former university student. This case was the catalyst for the huge growth of the nationwide #MeToo movement.

The growing #MeToo campaign on Egyptian social media spheres has even lead to political change. This past week, the Egyptian parliament passed a law that encouraged survivors of sexual assault crimes to report them by giving them the immediate right to anonymity.

While the fight is far from over, this surge of awareness and empowerment in Egypt inspires hope for a safer future for the country's to-be daughters. Moreover, it is amazing to see the power of social media being used for justice and change.

Unfortunately yet another devastating piece of news from "life under Covid-19" is the increase in domestic violence. Good to see you take a deep dive and look at how Egypt is responding, both women's rights advocates AND the parliament. This 7 sentence blog entry barely touches on the alleged "trigger" events- the Cairo resort, the outcry against Egypt's vaunted police, and other pivotal developments in this social revolution. Be sure to offer a clear explanation of what happened and your analysis of the unfolding events. What are your news links?
